Reflections and plans
Grace and peace to you from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,
who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever! Amen. (Gal 1:3-5)
But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we may be adopted as sons with full rights. (Gal 4:4-5)

Psalm 100
A psalm. For giving thanks.
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his [a] ;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Celebrating Life!
a cheerful heart fills the day with song (Proverbs 15:15; the Message)
Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Hey guys!
Hoping you're all having a great week and aren't too stressed out with exams from school!! We're trying to have a good time out here packing our stuff and getting everything ready for our trip. :)
So we were thinking originally about having youth at our place this Friday BUT given our 'box' situation and lack of dishes and other necessity situation- we have decided to meet at Jarno's parents place in South Surrey. We'll spend some time in the Word, some worship, maybe we'll even put a little outdoor fire on in the firepit outside?? Sounds like a relaxing and uplifting night after a busy week.
Hope everyone can make it out for the good times... and if you have a little time to bake/make/drop by the store to bring snacks it would be awesome!
God Bless,

This Friday...
Sorry, I guess the fact that I'm leading youth this Friday has gone to my head. Anyway, this Friday we will be meeting at the Church, if everything goes to plan, which it should. I don't know if Sam prearranged any worship, but if not, some a capella songs will suffice. I might organize a game or something, but I hope to be finished by 9, after which I was hoping that some of the guys would join me for some Sauna at my place. This is nothing prearranged, but if the ladies would like to do something together afterwards (somewhere close by, but not necessarily), that would make it easier for everyone as far as ride are concerned. However, since this is such a late suggestion, then we can drop the whole Sauna thing and do it another time if it doesn't work for the majority of you. But I just thought it'd be an an interesting deviation from the post-youth Tim Hortons gatherings. Regardless, we will have a message, and if the lateness of the whole thing bothers any of you, we can get the conventional part done by 8:30.
Any Thoughts?
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Hey everyone!!
Hoping y'all are loving the sunshine as much as we are!!
Thanks Sam and Justin for leading the last meeting. It was awesome word, worship and fellowship time... and you can't forget that pizza :)
This Friday we want to have kind of a discussion night where we can talk about why you're a Christian, why you believe God made you, and just... discussing! If anyone has something in particular they feel they need to share, this is your chance!!
So the plan is to meet at our place in Walnut Grove for 6:30pm. We were thinking about doing a bonfire at Derby Reach Regional Park here. If the park is still open, we'll mosey on over there and make a fire. If it's closed, we'll hang out at our place! :)
If you're not too sure about where we live you can contact one of us and we'll direct you!
May God Bless you as you go forth with your journeys this week,
;) Jarno and Liisa

Patric who?
I learned of Patric when we moved to the US. I had never before even heard his name. And now in my studies of Christian history I was introduced more thoroughly to his incredible life story.
I found this short writing of it and wanted to post it here to remind us of the great men & women of God who have gone before us...
THE LIFE OF ST. PATRICK
The Chicago River is emerald this week. Thousands of small children pinched each other on Tuesday for failing to wear green, and plenty of people in Boston got smooched because they claimed to be Irish. On March 17 each year, every American becomes Irish. Yet, while there seems no purpose to green-sprinkled shamrock-shaped cookies, this celebration honors a great Christian man. He may not have driven any snakes out of Ireland (since they did not exist there in the first place), but Patrick did spread the Gospel across the island. Through his missionary work, Christianity took hold in the predominantly pagan nation with a strength that has lasted to this day.
The man we know today as St. Patrick was born Maewyn Succat in Britain in AD 389. His father was a wealthy Christian deacon, but most likely because the position offered tax incentives and not because the family was particularly religious. Then, when Maewyn was 16, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold as a slave in Ireland. For the next six year Maewyn served his owner by caring for sheep in remote regions far from human company. During this time, Maewyn turned to Christ for comfort and became deeply devoted to God.
After six years of captivity, Maewyn decided it was time to escape. He believed that God spoke to him in a dream and told him to leave Ireland. After a 200 mile walk to the coast, Maewyn escaped back to Britain, and then ended in Gaul (France) where he devoted himself to religious training, studying under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre. There in Gaul Maewyn came to be called Patrick.
Patrick believed he was called to return to minister to the pagans in Ireland. St. Palladius was first sent to Ireland, but when he was sent on to Scotland two years later, Patrick was free to take the job. Patrick returned to the land of his captivity with the mission to preach Christ to set the spiritual captives free. He apparently had a good personality and people liked him. Familiar with the language and culture, Patrick also worked to make use of local customs in order to help the pagans understand Christianity. He used the three-leafed clover, the shamrock, in order to explain the Trinity. Because the nature-worshiping religions saw the sun as a powerful symbol, he developed what is known as the Celtic Cross, with a circle around the central section of the cross. As Patrick trekked across the island, he started churches and schools. Several times he was arrested, and yet he escaped each time.
Patrick ministered to the people of Ireland for decades, a popular, winsome man who loved Christ. Finally, on March 17, AD 461, Patrick died in County Down. His life of service has been celebrated ever since.
Today, over 100 cities hold St. Patrick's Day parades, but relatively few people know anything about the man whose life is being honored. As we drink our shamrock shakes (they only come out once a year) and wear our green ties (they only come out once a year), let's remember a man who devoted his life to the service of Christ, and whose devotion changed the spiritual direction of an entire nation.

Making Waves
Maybe we haven't been given similar platforms to impact our time, but we all do have our sphere of influence.
How are we impacting our world?
Are we being faithful in what we can do NOW for God?
And if we are faithful in the little maybe God can enlarge our dreams and help us make bigger waves...
I wanted to attach two stories of people in our time who are making waves for God.
Check these out and be inspired:
Here is a speech a 12 year old girl gave in her school speech competition. Her teachers didn't want her to speak on this and said she could not advance in the competition, but she felt she needed to speak out anyway. 12 year old with passionate conviction!
You can listen to her here:

And here is the inspirational story of how God moves in mysterious ways...
JOHN BREAUX: CONFOUNDING THE WISE OF THIS WORLD - (Print)
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; -1 Corinthians 1:27
John Breaux was known in the northern Denver area as the guy who rode around on his bicycle picking up trash. People often thought he was homeless because of his worn out shoes, shaggy beard and missing teeth, but he always gave away what people handed him. Those who knew John loved him. He earned the nickname "Jesus" partially because of his long beard, but mostly because of his warm generosity and kindness to everybody he met.
The communities of Lafayette and Louisville, Colorado were shocked by news of John Breaux's death on January 30. Breaux was hit and killed by a car driven by a woman with dementia. A makeshift memorial was set up at the spot of his death, and jars were placed in restaurants and stores all around town to collect money in order to help Breaux's family with his burial expenses. Stories of Breaux's acts of kindness sprouted from people who talked about how he'd touched them by his selfless life. His big, welcoming smile cheered the daily lives of many. He'd carried groceries for people, and sometimes he bought food for them using the money he'd collected from recycling aluminum cans.
"I've never seen the eyes of an angel, but I bet they look like that," said Rev. Jim Burgen, while looking at a picture of Breaux. "We will not be the same, because he changed us forever."
An estimated 2000 people attended Breaux's memorial service. "You just don't know the impact that one life can have on the community," said Rick Williamson, an Erie resident who knew Breaux from church. If a man's wealth were measured by his friends, Williamson said, "I'd say John died pretty wealthy — wealthier than I'll ever be."
According to his aunt, Breaux loved bike-riding, bowling, and Jesus. Breaux had been diagnosed with schizophrenia early in life. When his parents died, he moved with his brother to Colorado, where he completely gave up all his medications. From that point on, his brother said, he just "blossomed." Perhaps he was healed. Perhaps he was misdiagnosed, or had a mild case. Whatever the case, Breaux lived with his brother's family and spent his days loving his neighbors.
According to columnist Dylan Otto Krider:
"Everyone mentioned his big smile… The truth is, he was everywhere, and never seemed to sleep. Then when he died, literally the entire community got the wind knocked out of them. A good number of the people I interviewed broke down crying. All of them had a story about some good dead Breaux did, and when I went to his memorial, thousands showed up to pay respect to the man."
In our world, the most "successful" people are those featured in People or Fortune magazines. They have money; they have looks; they have hot careers. Yet, many of the rich and famous have tragic personal lives filled with drugs and adultery and misery. If more humans were able to look into the peaceful, cheerful life of a man with grungy shoes and see the love of Jesus moving through him to other people, people in the world might change their definition of success.
Until his death, few people outside of Colorado had heard of John Breaux. Yet, he now serves as an inspiration to all of us. We don't have to win the Lottery to be a blessing to the people around us; we merely need to take what has already been given us, and make the most of it with a heart open to the Spirit's leading.
Who was John Breaux? One community member answered, "Just a guy who spent his day making Louisville and Lafayette a better place. Seriously."
"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid...Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." - Matthew 5:14, 16

Shaped by God
There are different voices and forces that aim to shape us. Our families are our primary growing grounds helping to shape our personalities, values and prioroties. Our friends and peers have their share of influence on how we think and behave. School and education has an intentional program to shape us in our knowing and thinking. The culture all around us is bombarding us with images and messages of what life should be about...
Where is the voice of God in all of this?
We need to be very intentional in learning to hear the voice of God in our lives and let His word and Spirit shape us in His image. It will not happen automatically or passively. We need to be proactive in it. We need to learn to still our internal space and learn to walk with God in this life.
This Friday we will pursue it together.
We will pause in His presence and let Him speak into our lives from His Word!
So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
(The Message - guess the passage?)

Agape
The heart of God beats with love for all His creation.
Have I joined His heartbeat?
I think that the most essential feature of being a Christian is to LOVE.
Love is what we should be known for.
I don't have God like love in myself. My love is so selfish.
So I need true love from God.
My desire to learn to love like God has grown more intense.
I want to be moved and controlled by His love in all that I do.
I want to be known by the way I love.
And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly ... God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5)

God has only children, not grandchildren...
This was a statement I heard today. It was said in the context of what was happening to a vibrant revival movement (Pietism) with its second generation. The movement that had begun with a discovery and emphasis of the inner work of God's Spirit was becoming more a new form of religion with legalism as the second generation grew in its influence. But they realized that it is not possible to live out a pious life without the dynamic work of the Spirit inside. That is why the second generation could not just inherit the movement from their forefathers. They needed the reality of the Spirit in them also!
I wonder how it is with us?
Specially when we grow up in Christian households. Many times we kinda grow into a form of Christianity without its power inside of us. This is sad, because Christianity is all about life in the Spirit and not outward religion. That is why every generation - you and I - need to experience God for ourselves to have the life and not just an outward form of religion...
Let's take hold of God for ourselves and seek to be Spirit filled people so that our generation would not end up like this:
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. (2Tim 3:1-5)

Developing Devotion
It was great to hang out together, have fun and also deepen our devotion to God together. Hopefully you, who had to stay back this time, had a blessed weekend too. And don't worry, we'll pick up the direction we started at Whistler now together this Friday...
here is a little taste of what we looked at from Daniel's life:
8-10 But Daniel determined that he would not defile himself by eating the king's food or drinking his wine, so he asked the head of the palace staff to exempt him from the royal diet. The head of the palace staff, by God's grace, liked Daniel, but he warned him, "I'm afraid of what my master the king will do. He is the one who assigned this diet and if he sees that you are not as healthy as the rest, he'll have my head!"
11-13 But Daniel appealed to a steward who had been assigned by the head of the palace staff to be in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: "Try us out for ten days on a simple diet of vegetables and water. Then compare us with the young men who eat from the royal menu. Make your decision on the basis of what you see."
14-16 The steward agreed to do it and fed them vegetables and water for ten days. At the end of the ten days they looked better and more robust than all the others who had been eating from the royal menu. So the steward continued to exempt them from the royal menu of food and drink and served them only vegetables.
17-19 God gave these four young men knowledge and skill in both books and life. In addition, Daniel was gifted in understanding all sorts of visions and dreams. At the end of the time set by the king for their training, the head of the royal staff brought them in to Nebuchadnezzar. When the king interviewed them, he found them far superior to all the other young men. None were a match for Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
Sometimes we wonder: is it worth devoting my life to God?
Will I miss out on something fun others do?
Daniel faced many challenges to his devotion, but he remained faithful, humble and loving God. And he experienced God's faithfulness and presence in amazing ways.
He testifies to us that it's totally worth devoting our lives completely to God!

Mountain experience
It is not that God dwells in a special way in the mountains, but something seems to happen to us as we climb up. Life gets a new perspective and we become more sensitive to the reality of God.
So maybe, this weekend can be a special time for us as we drive up to Whistler. May it be a time of meeting with God and develop a deeper devotion to Him.
